Senate Minority Leader Karen Mayne
Senator Mayne's SB10 and SB76 have passed the House and Senate and are waiting to be signed by the governor. She has a few bills waiting to be heard in House committees. Her town hall on Monday with Representatives Kwan and Weight was very informative and she discussed the beer law (SB132), health care (SB96), a few of her bills, and how the community could get more involved in local and state government with the constituents in attendance.

Senate Minority Whip Luz Escamilla
This week Senator Escamilla's SB143, Public Education Vision Screening, successfully passed with a favorable recommendation in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee Wednesday afternoon. On Valentine's Day, she and other female Utah legislators celebrated the 149th anniversary of First to Vote. The first vote by a woman took place in Utah, Feb. 14, 1870. Sen. Escamilla also joined the 24 other Utah women legislators in celebrating Martha Hughes Cannon, the first woman elected to a state senate in the entire U.S.

Senate Minority Assistant Whip Jani Iwamoto
Senator Iwamoto this week visited with students from Oakwood Elementary, Guadalupe Elementary, and St. Vincent de Paul School; recognized Utah Nonprofits on the floor; visited with Utah PTA; and passed seven bills on the senate floor this week. As a member of the Senate Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Standing Committee she voted 'no' on HB220, Radioactive Waste Amendments.
Senators Iwamoto and Davis hold a town hall Saturday, Feb. 16th from 1:00-3:00pm at Legacy Village of Sugar House.

This week, Senator Kitchen focused on a substitute for Senator Anderegg’s affordable housing bill, SB34. The substitute would require that cities with transit infrastructure had to meet at least four items from a list of requirements to allow moderate income housing within the communities of these cities. Another priority this week was opposing HB220, a bill that would allow radioactive waste of B & C classes to be stored in Utah. Although the bill did pass out favorably in committee, he will be watching it for debate on the Senate floor.

"The legislative session is moving fast! An important bill that came into committee this week is SB149, the Transportation and Student Success Act.I worked alongside numerous stakeholders in our education community to understand the ramifications of SB149. I strongly encouraged the maker of the bill to seek stakeholder input. SB149 gives local funding to education, and was passed out of committee with a unanimous favorable recommendation. In the Senate Education Appropriations Committee, I urged my colleagues to realize the impact that nurses in our schools have on student health and safety. In the Transportation Committee, we successfully passed out HB96 with a favorable recommendation, keeping nighttime construction safe for workers and convenient for citizens."
