Senator Jen Plumb and Representative Paul Cutler announced that, beginning July 1, 2026, Utahns can now obtain the new full-plate design for the Great Salt Lake Preservation specialty license plate.

The plate was authorized through SB 92, legislation passed in 2023 to create a Great Salt Lake Preservation specialty license plate and generate dedicated funding for conservation and preservation efforts. Revenue from the plate's annual contribution fee is deposited into a fund administered by the Utah Department of Natural Resources that supports projects that benefit the Great Salt Lake.

"The response from Utahns to the Great Salt Lake plate has been incredible," said Senator Plumb. "People wanted a way to show their support for the lake, and this plate has become exactly that. We're excited that this beautiful new design is finally available and hope it inspires even more Utahns to get involved in protecting our state's most important resource."

"I'm excited to have a Utah license plate that captures the vibrant colors and beauty of the Great Salt Lakesunsets that so many Utahns love," said Representative Cutler.

Shortly after SB 92 was passed, Utah's specialty license plate approval process changed, requiring the new full-platedesign to undergo an extended review and approval process before it could be produced. Senator Plumb and Representative Cutler thanked Utahns for their patience as the design moved through the required approval process.

How to Replace Your GSL Plate With the New Design:

You have two options:

Option 1: Wait until your next registration renewal

• You must visit a DMV office in person.

• Request your registration renewal and plate replacement at the same time.

• This option allows you to avoid paying the specialty plate contribution fee ($25) twice in the same year. All other administrative fees will still apply. 

• You will receive a new license plate number.

Option 2: Get the new design immediately

• Visit a DMV office in person or order a replacement plate online.

• You will pay the $25 Great Salt Lake contribution fee when obtaining the new plate, along with all other administrative fees. 

• You will receive a new license plate number.

• When your registration comes due, you will pay the contribution fee again as part of your normal registration renewal.

You can apply for one through Utah's specialty plate program by:

• Applying online through the DMV's specialty plate process.

• Visiting a DMV office in person.
