Utah Senate Minority Caucus’ Leadership Team Following a Special Election in Senate District 12


SALT LAKE CITY – This morning, the Utah Senate Democrats held a caucus election to address a vacancy in their leadership team due to the resignation of former Senator Karen Mayne and the appointment of Senator-elect Karen Kwan. The new leadership team for the 65th Legislature includes:


  • Senator Luz Escamilla, D – District 10, will serve as Minority Leader

  • Senator Kathleen Riebe, D – District 15, was elected to serve as Minority Whip

  • Senator Jennifer Plumb, D – District 9, will serve as Minority Assistant Whip

  • Senator Stephanie Pitcher, D – District 14, will serve as Minority Caucus Manager


The Senate Democrats’ leadership team issued the following statement:


"With the onset of the 2023 General Session, Senate Democrats are resilient, focused, and more united than ever. We come prepared as a leadership team to bring forward responsive, data-driven, and well thought out public policy to serve the great people of Utah.
