Formal Opposition to MIDA Stratos Data Center Project and Request for No Vote onAll Related Actions

May 4
1 min read

Commissioners Bingham, Perry, and Vincent,

As you prepare to vote on May 4, we urge you to fully consider the position of the communities

we represent and the weight of this decision. The Utah Senate Democrats submit, on behalf of

the constituents of Senate Districts 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15, that our constituents oppose the

proposed MIDA Stratos data center project. We have received hundreds of emails and phone

calls from constituents demanding that this project not move forward, and we are placing that

opposition on the record.

A central issue is the profound lack of available information about this proposal. A project of this

scale, with impacts that extend across the entire state and region and could alter our ecosystem,

requires full transparency and a process that meaningfully includes stakeholders from across

Utah. To our knowledge, that level of disclosure and engagement has not occurred.

One of our main concerns is the Great Salt Lake. The lake is in critical condition, and the state is

actively investing significant resources to stabilize it. At the same time, Utah faces sustained

pressure on water supply, energy capacity, and air quality. Advancing a project of this magnitude

without a clear analysis of water sourcing and depletion, consumptive use, heat island effects,

grid capacity, emissions profiles, and long-term environmental footprint is reckless.

We urge you to vote no on Resolution #26-12, Resolution #26-11, and the approval of Interlocal

Agreement #26-15. Considering the current environmental crisis in our state, this project is not

right for Utah.
