Safely Disposing Prescription Drugs - SB85
Last fall, KSL-TV in Salt Lake City ran an investigative piece on improper disposal of pharmaceuticals by some medical facilities. In one case, officers located a dumpster that included 29 pounds of prescription drugs, along with patient information. KSL brought the issue to the attention of Senator Karen Mayne, who agreed to look into it.
Senator Mayne spoke to the Utah Health Care Association who indicated that the association has best practices for disposal of pharmaceuticals. However, the Senator and the Association quickly realized that there is no statewide requirement that facilities meet those best practices.
SB85 - Controlled Substance Disposal Amendments is an industry bill that puts into law the practices already in place by most facilities in the health care industry. This bill will help prevent inappropriate disposal of prescription drugs in Utah.
SB85 passed both the Senate and the House unanimously and has been sent to the Governor for his signature.
