A Call to Action for Blood Donors

For Immediate Release

Feb. 24, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY – Today, Sen. Derek Kitchen and Rep. Suzanne Harrison are calling upon all eligible Utahns to make an appointment to donate blood. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed significant impacts on the nation’s essential blood supply. Similarly, blood collection in Utah has suffered due to the unprecedented instability caused by the pandemic.

Despite supply shortages, patients across the state and country depend upon the life-sustaining reserve of blood. Surgeries, traumatic injuries, organ transplants and many other medical treatments require ample blood supply. In effect, blood donations save lives and support individual health and the health of the community at large.

To make an appointment to donate, call ARUP Blood Services at 801-584-5272. ARUP Blood Services is the sole provider of blood to the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Shriners Hospital for Children, South Jordan Health Center, University of Utah Hospital and clinics.

To make an appointment with the American Red Cross Utah Region, click here or call 1-800-RED CROSS. Donation facilities follow proper physical spacing, increased disinfection of surfaces and other protective guidelines due to COVID-19.
