Senate Democrats Statement on Food Sales Tax Proposal
Salt Lake City – The Utah Senate Democrats issued the following statement regarding the withdrawal of a proposal to increase sales tax on food:
We are greatly relieved by the death of a proposal to balance the state’s budget on the backs of low income and working class Utahns. Sales tax on food is one of the most regressive taxes, disproportionately hitting those who spend most of their income on food. We were alarmed by talk of rushing through such a consequential piece of legislation with only three days to go in the 2017 General Session.
Utah currently gives away hundreds of millions of dollars in corporate tax exemptions. We believe that the cost and benefits of these tax giveaways should be scrutinized prior to any discussion about raising taxes on food. In fact, thirty-two states, plus the District of Columbia, charge no sales tax at all on food. Utah should consider that path before raising taxes on food.
