Senate Minority Leader Karen Mayne

Senate Minority Leader Karen Mayne's SB175 Gang Awareness Week passed the Senate today and moves to the house. The bill creates an annual Utah Gang Awareness Week the third week of September.

“These officers need to be celebrated for their efforts to help cut the often-generational gang life cycle,” said Senator Mayne. “They’re helping young men and women escape gang life, bringing them together for activities such as team sports, support classes and social gatherings.” Read more about this event here.

Senate Minority Caucus Manager Derek Kitchen

This week Senator Kitchen voted for SB132, which would raise the alcohol by weight content of beer sold outside of state-run liquor stores from 3.2% to 4.8%. "I'm just excited to see us normalize our alcohol a little bit and I think this will be good for the state of Utah,” Sen. Kitchen said on Tuesday, speaking to competition being a part of the ethos in economics we see in Utah. Bills that made it out of committee this week that he opposes include HB133, a bill that would delay the implementation of citizen-passed initiatives, and HB320, which would prohibit municipalities from banning plastic bags in their communities. Senator Davis’ Homeless Shelter Funding Amendments bill passed the House and will be signed into law. This bill proposes a clarification on how the State Tax Commission calculates a county’s or municipality’s contribution to the Homeless Shelter Cities Mitigation Restricted Account.

On Wednesday, Senator Davis welcomed the ambassador from Azerbaijan, Elin Suleymanov, to the Senate and House Floor. The Ambassador had a wonderful visit to the Capitol and is working with Senator Davis on how to use Utah as an international resource.  She was honored to speak at the Women in Business Day at the Capitol, and to share advice with women and students.

 Last Saturday, Senator Riebe was excited to support Shireen Gorbhani at the special election for Salt Lake County Councilor.
