Comments on: Of Boycotts and Book Burnings

Some of these comments don’t seem to be well informed. I have conflicting views of the idea of boycotting Utah, but that is because Utah itself is a very conflicted state. Being angry with the entire state shows you don’t really understand what’s going on here. You could be much more effective if you paid attention to the details of what Utah is really like.

The vast majority of the people who live in Utah were born here, it’s not a choice that they made. Do you understand?

oh, also there is this little tid-bit taken from just 2 years ago. It’s about Mr. Larry Miller (owner of Utah Jazz, Car Dealerships, many Theaters in Utah, and all around Scumbag) pulled Brokeback Mountain from his theaters:

“Larry Miller’s decision to pull the movie from his theatres made international headlines. Local gay advocacy groups threatened to boycott his businesses. But a poll showed 60 percent of Utahns agreed with Miller’s decision.

After his public comments, Miller told the Deseret News, ‘I see the attention I’m getting is a lot more positive than negative’.”

Now, if Utah really is full of sympathetic people why did 60% agree it was good to have an R rated movie involving homosexuality removed from theaters? I would hope that there are people who would be anti-homosexuals, who would think that a movie should be allowed to play. But even with these possibilities, there’s still 60% of Utah who agree that art and films with homosexuality should be removed from America.

“Yes, please come and spend your money on our state. We lost a good chunk throwing it into California’s law making policies, and we might have totally screwed ourselves over but cutting into our tourism by spreading hate, so please, come back and spend money” I do feel for the people in the state that are tossed into the middle of this war zone, but if you choose to live in a place that is largely dominated by a bunch of hatemongers, then i really cant see what else you’d expect to happen. How does boycotting Utah hurt the people trying to support gay rights? The LDS Church owns almost any and all things that gain revenue from tourism. I don’t see how that’s going to help much. Pity, it really is such a beautiful state, but I will never again step food in such a hate-breeding place, not even for a lay-over flight. Glad I got to see it once before this happened.

Yes, please, bring your business to the tolerant pockets in Utah (Salt Lake City, Park City, Moab, etc.) to help us liberate ourselves from our Mormon oppressors!

Think of it as the same reason Americans need to have cultural and economic exchange with China and Cuba to help their people become free.
